ATM did not work for either of our US debit cards after a 30 min wait in line (only 6 people were waiting). We withdrew cash from the ATM at Vindi grocery store on the next block (had both USD and CRC; $6.95 fee)

Got charged a "commission" for withdrawing out of my account.

Easy access to the 2 ATM's that they have on the outside of the bank (left side of the breezeway leading to the main doors). We found that when using our Canadian debit/credit cards, do not use the "Ingles" (English) option. You will only get a blank screen with a weird error message on the upper left corner. Instead, choose "Espanol", and figure out the prompts (if you know Spanish, even a little bit, you should be able to handle this). Got our colones (no option for US $'s), and away we went. We felt safe the whole time, and if you are worried about safety, use ATM's in the daytime.
