About
Surf Dog is the toes-in-the-sand beach bar in Playa Grande where the smash burger — crispy edges, juicy middle — and the margaritas do the heavy lifting, with a 4–6pm two-for-one happy hour and flavors like spicy, passionfruit, and guava sour. The guacamole with plantain, sweet-potato, and yucca chips gets called the best in Costa Rica, and the homemade passionfruit cheesecake is a must. Host Heiner keeps it warm; there's live music and cards on every table.

If you’re in Playa Grande, you have to stop at Surf Dog. It’s exactly what you want after a beach day — super casual, laid-back, toes-in-the-sand kind of vibe with great music playing in the background if there isn’t live music!! You can grab a drink to go and see the incredible sunset and come back to eat! The smash burger? Absolutely amazing. Crispy edges, juicy in the middle — one of those burgers you keep thinking about later. And the drinks are just as good, especially the margaritas. Fresh, perfectly balanced, and dangerously easy to sip. What really makes the place though is the people. Every server and bartender was genuinely friendly and welcoming — the kind of crew that makes you want to hang out a little longer and order “just one more.” Great food, fabulous drinks, awesome atmosphere. Total beach-town gem. 🌊🍔🍹 Pura Vids
Great location next to the beach. Great service, excellent food and the best guacamole we had in Costa Rica with plantain, purple sweet potato and yucca chips. Also don't miss the homemade passionfruit cheesecake - it's to die for! Heiner is a great host and also a great surfing instructor on the side!
If you find yourself near surf dog in Playa Grande, stop by. Ask for a chiliguaro, margaritas two for one happy hour and a tropical salad! Great spot to relax not far from the beach.
