About
The full-scale supermarket in Playas del Coco: modern, air-conditioned, and stocked the way a shopper from back home would expect, with fresh produce, meats and cheeses, a bakery, sushi to go, and the widest beer and liquor selection in town. Staff speak English and it is easy for expats, while still carrying Costa Rican staples. Expect prices about 10 to 15 percent above the smaller markets, the trade-off for the selection.

Why did I find this place so late? I’d been staying in Coco for eight days and only discovered it on day five! This is the best - and probably the only - real supermarket in town in the classic sense. Yes, there are other “Supers” like MaxiPali or New China, but this one feels just like what you’d find back home in Canada. Fresh fruits and veggies, salads, meats, cheeses - everything you’d expect. They also have the widest selection of beer and high-octane booze, freshly baked bread, and even sushi to go. Prices are about 10-15% higher than elsewhere, but you’ll find plenty of unique items available only here. The Subway next door is also a great spot for a quick snack. Highly recommended!
A bit pricey but understandable for a beach village. Many North American brands, few local brands (but there are other supermarkets nearby to visit if you, like us, prefer to experience local items when travelling), but the selection is smaller than expected (but again, it is a village - embrace it...Pura Vida). Enough vegan and health items to keep anyone happy. Friendly service.
This is a very nice, modern, clean grocery store. It definitely caters to the expats in the area. Prices are definitely higher than the normal grocery stores in the area. Nice pastries.
