About
A hostel that stands out for being genuinely clean and in good repair — rare, longtime backpackers note, for an affordable Costa Rican spot. Owner-manager Gabi speaks strong English and is repeatedly called gentle and professional, and female guests note feeling completely at ease. Rooms are enclosed-pod style with big shelves and night A/C, and a huge commercial fridge means fewer grocery runs. Quiet hours are respected, with a short walk to the beach, surfboard rentals, and a yoga deck.

My ONLY (small) problem with Akih: the fully enclosed 3-level bunks crammed into the dorms made it a bit claustrophobic for an extended stay for somebody my age (when i was young i wouldn't have cared). Even a smaller adult can't sit up in bed even partially & there's zero spare floor space so if your roommates are careless dummies & drop their stuff everywhere it's hard to walk through. HOWEVER this didn't happen often because there are enough very big wooden shelves for everybody's suitcases & big backpacks in the room, enough lockers in the hallway for everybody's small packs & LOTS of high, tight, evenly-spaced clothesline over clean gravel along the narrow side of the yard. Gabi the owner/manager speaks very good english & seems genuinely, extremely gentle & professional. All the female guests obviously felt PERFECTLY comfortable around him. The property is kept VERY clean & attractive with plenty of healthy trees for shade. Everything is in good repair (which seems RARE in an affordable CostaRican hostel!) The dorms are comfortably air-conditioned at night. The kitchen is decently equipped & has a HUGE commercial fridge. Very peaceful vibe... far enough from the main road & the 11pm (23:00) quiet hours are respected, but in the evening mellow socializing & partying are normal. The nearest store isn't so great... OK for snacks&beer. The best priced & stocked grocery / general merchandise store in the area, Super Ronny's, means a pretty long hot walk along the extremely chaotic, often stinky, main road. HOWEVER Akih's fridge is so big you can shop less frequently than when staying where the fridge is an overfilled mess.
I loved my stay at Akih! This was my first longer stay in a hostel so I was a little nervous, but it was so comfortable to stay at Akih and I continued to come back and visit even after I left. The place itself is comfortable, cute, and they consistently keep it clean. More than anything Gabi who runs the hostel and Laila the host are so welcoming, helpful and informative about hostel info and local spots. Akih was a great gathering place and the people really made it such a wonderful experience. I will miss everyone here so much!
I loved staying at this hostel 🥰 the staff and volunteers are so helpful and they have interactive evenings. When I was there Leila & friends cooked gnocchi with me and we all had a family dinner and game night - it was so welcoming and fun! The location is great, I had a car and they let me park no problem. I stayed in a dorm. It was perfect for what I paid for and the kitchen is super easy & accessible to use. I really enjoyed the yoga area too!! Thank you Leila and company for making it an unforgettable stay 🤗
