Maudie Cabins

This is the cheapest accommodation I've seen in Costa Rica since the 1990's. Despite that, I have to say that it did not meet my low expectations. I'll start with the positive points. The apartment is a stone's throw from the beach and a grocery store. It's far enough away from the town's main road that it's pretty quiet. The pounding surf is a beautiful sound all night. There's an air conditioner/fan. The people working (volunteers, as I understand it) here seem friendly and willing to help, even though we were checking in about 3 hours after their normal check-in time ended at 15:00 on a Friday. The bed is big and soft and the bedsheets are clean. There's dish soap by the sink and a usable sponge. There's a working refrigerator. If a cleaning product, a mop, or a broom has ever crossed the threshold here, it looks like that must have been decades ago. If you take your sandy shoes off when you come in, you'll regret it. The only clean surface inside is the bed. The ad said we'd have a private bathroom but our arrival and use of the bathroom surprised the other couple staying in the suite who also thought they would be alone. The toilet doesn't flush at all, but you can't see that until you find the bathroom light switch above the sink in the kitchen. We did eventually figure out how to flush the toilet by removing the lid from the tank and reaching in to push the rubber valve back into place after each flush. The kitchen is a grimy collection of a few broken pots & pans, a tray of tableware covered in bug feces, a few plates, and a rusty sink. We did later find another communal outdoor kitchen and an additional toilet behind the houses. The cobwebs in the chipped and peeling shelves intended for clothes in the bedroom might be spun by the same spiders who nest in and around the wooden box that serves as a tiny nightstand. There's a folding bed/couch futon thingy in the common room. It collapses like a spastic beanbag chair if you try to sit on it, so be careful. The inclusion of a naked lightbulb to illuminate each room adds to the overall aesthetic of the place. If you're the type of person who likes sleeping right in front of a 2 m x 2 m window with no curtains that is immediately next to the front door, you'll love the bedroom. I stole the curtains I found balled up in the living room and hung them in that window, trying to convince myself that the thin bamboo slats in the other window would provide some semblance of privacy and cut some of the brilliant shine from the streetlight outside. The slimy and sandy bathroom floor was less unpleasant than the jet of water that escaped the last unclogged hole in the shower head (see photo) In the morning, I complained about the toilet and I used another one in the communal kitchen area. That worked in the morning, but not in the afternoon. Access to a working toilet is, I feel, a basic part of an acceptable accommodation if it's not billed as back-woods camping. Maybe I'm weird. If your only expectation is four walls and a roof, this place will satisfy you. I'm glad I was only there for two nights.

Incredible location, right in the center of town and 50 meters from the beach. The place is rustic and super friendly. It has everything you need for a great vacation and a community that was incredibly welcoming and helpful. Thank you so much!
