About
A jungle lodge, which locals and guests call Rana Roja, that is a bit of a trek to reach but pays off with monkeys, red frogs, and iguanas around the cabins and early-morning birding and river kayaking nearby. Mario the host earns warm, repeated praise for looking after guests. Be aware the pool has been out of service for stretches, so confirm before you book if it is central to your plans.

We visited the Rana Roja over the Xmas holiday and had a blast. This is a very unique spot and definitely worth a visit. Costa Rica continues to set the high bar for eco-tourism. Particular highlights were taking a water taxi out to the point and then walking back to town along the beach, kayaking through the rivers and an early morning birding adventure. In the afternoons, we relaxed by the pool and watched the kids (and some adults) on the water slide followed by breath taking sunsets from the second floor patio. We mostly ate at the lodge, which was very good, though there are also options in town, if you want to do the water taxi. Mario, the host, was absolutely incredible, eager to ensure we had a wonderful stay and all his care and consideration was much appreciated. Highly highly recommend.
Amazing lodge in the jungle, complicated to get to but definitely worth the trouble. All employees extremely friendly and always available. Food was very good. Surrounded by beautiful vegetation, animals, highly recommendable. Kids loved the pool and the possibilty during the correct season to make a guided outing to watch egg laying turtles topped off and extraordinary visit.
The room was basic but okay. Unfortunately the food was horrible. Basic dishes, but we found hair, plastic & metal in our found on different occasions. Would be okay with staying in the cabins, but do not recommend eating here! It was an amazing experience to sleep in a cabin in the jungle. We saw wildlife all around such as monkeys, red frogs, iguana,… You can use the pool from the hotel around the corner which is a really nice addition as the pool of Rana Roja looked like it hadn’t been in service for over a year.
