Drake Bay itself: quiet beaches, calm sea, and safe swimming — though one visitor notes the water gets deep quickly. Reviewers describe empty stretches of sand, nature walks full of wildlife, night walks for the "critters," and fast boats connecting you onward. The most useful review is about getting here: yes, you can drive in independently, but a high-clearance 4WD is genuinely mandatory — the road from Rincón takes about an hour and twenty minutes, is heavily potholed, and an ordinary city SUV will suffer, though there are no river crossings and some steep sections are paved. Visitors staying at lodges outside town add that driving after dark isn't recommended.

I write this review hoping it's a good spot if someone is trying to have this question answered: can you drive independently to Bahia Drake? This was actually one of my main wonderings while planning my trip to Costa Rica, with the intention of being based in Bahia Drake to visit Corcovado. Easy answer: yes, you can, on a 4WD. But my dear citizen, beware: by 4WD I don't mean the posh SUVs that you drive back in your city for commuting. A 4WD with double the clearance the avg. SUV has is MANDATORY to avoid bottoming out on every pothole you face (and there's plenty for the 1h20min drive from the main road). Full insurance with rental cars also help, but still to drive there means to have almost 3hours two-ways of discomfort. That said, there's no river crossing, and in fact some steep sections are perfectly paved. You could wonder why they don't pave the entire road from Rincon, but after you visit the bay you understand that doing so would mean to lose a magical place and it's true soul. In essence, 5 stars as this is likely the best place you'll ever visit, and book the boat from Sierpe - holidays are too short to hassle.
