My wife and I and two friends were staying in the Hotel Presidente in San Jose at the end of a two-week trip to Costa Rica. The night before we left, we decided to stay in for the evening and try the hotel’s restaurant, Azotea Calle 7. It was a great choice. The restaurant is on the upper floor of the hotel, accessed by elevator and by a red staircase in the lobby. The restaurant features an outside terrace as well as tables inside. Given the wind that night, we opted for interior seating. The menu is very comprehensive as is the drink list. Table service was excellent and the staff do not rush you to make a dinner selection. I opted for the ahi tuna on a bed of mushroom risotto. It was a wonderful taste combination. My wife ordered the Thai curry with shrimp, which she said was fabulous. Our friends had a hamburger plate and the fish tacos, which they reported were both excellent. Azotea Calle 7 ended up being a wonderful choice for our last evening in San Jose.

I had a caipirnha and the white mushroom risotto with pan seared yellowfin tuna. I don't know what they brought me to drink but it wasn't a Caipirinha. I drank it anyway and it was fine. The risotto was very good. There were two different photos shoots happening on the terrace which was annoying when you're trying to eat. The service wasn't great; the waitress was nice but she wasn't very present.

During my stay at the Hotel Presidente, I had dinner and a few cocktails at Azotea Calle 7. The setting is beautiful, boasting a secret garden terrace with views over the city, as well as a lovely indoor dining space. The food and drinks were very good, and I thoroughly enjoyed my pasta dish. The menu offers a variety of options, including local dishes to try as well as international fare. The service was every bit as good as the food, and Esteban looked after us wonderfully. If you're after somewhere rather lovely for dinner while you're in San José, Azotea Calle 7 is a great shout.
