About
A San José day-trip operator known for volcano-and-waterfall combos — Irazú with the Ujarrás ruins, Poás with Doka coffee and La Paz waterfall — in small groups with guides travelers describe as engaging and knowledgeable. They're quick to lock in a last-minute booking, sometimes the night before, and the included lunch gets good marks. Guide quality can vary, so confirm a naturalist guide is included when you book.

We participated in the Irazu Volcano combo tour. Fantastic tour and Flippa is a wonderful knowledgeable tour guide. There was some miss communication with our reservation. The confirmation I had stated 7:50 am but the tour company picked us up at our hotel at 7:00 am. Unfortunately we had missed the pick up but was very thankful the company picked us up after they finished picking everyone else up. Since we missed breakfast, I really appreciated the food/bathroom stop before going to the volcano. Other than the small issue in the beginning the trip ended up being pretty great! Lunch was delicious and the atmosphere/view was a great choice as it exceeded our expectations. Overall, we highly recommend this tour. My favorite part of the trip was Irazu volcano and Ujarrás ruins. Bring a jacket is a must for the volcano as I did not realize how cold it would be in June.
I was in a bind since my other tour I scheduled canceled on me last minute. At 7:00 p.m. I messaged them and they were able to get me on their tour for the next morning. Eric the tour guide and Kiki the driver we're both amazing. They were warm and friendly and knowledgeable. The bus was newer with good air conditioning. A maximum of 20 people can fit on the tour. We left at 5:50 in the morning and returned around 5:00 p.m. we visited the doka coffee plantation and the paz waterfall. The Poas volcano was closed due to a recent eruption, but we spent more time at the plantation and waterfall Park. I would highly recommend it this tour
UPDATE: I am pleased to share that Expediciones Tropicales refunded us the full amount we had paid for our “tour”. I appreciate the company’s decision to make things right with us and hope they do include a guide with all of their future tours as advertised Do not book a tour with "Expediciones Tropicales" out of San José. We were very disappointed with our full day rain forest tour, which we went on last Saturday. Despite claims that we would be accompanied by an "expert tour guide" we were not. Our driver was fine, but he was not a tour guide. Without a tour guide, we learned nothing about the local flora and fauna, the national history and significance of the sites we visited, etc. We felt completely ripped off paying $186USD for a tour without a guide.
