About
A San José institution serving one legendary flavor and nothing else since 1901 — a spiced sorbetera ice cream of cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and star anise from a secret recipe, unlike anything you've tasted. Grab a cup at this humble, always-busy counter by Mercado Central, then wander the market. A true Costa Rican classic worth experiencing.

One of the oldest icecream shops in San Jose, and is always a busy spot with tons of locals. The icecream is absolutely delicious! A unique flavor of mango/pineapple/banana/cinnamon/nutmeg/ and star anise, it’s a secret recipe and was unlike anything I had ever tasted before. Highly recommend stopping by here and walking through the market while enjoying this delicious dessert. They also have counter seating available, too.
Great sorbet with a delicious unique flavor. I think it contains nutmeg. There was plenty of counter seating when we arrived and the guys serving the sorbet were great. Our server spoke English. Stop by and get some sorbet and then walk around the market. Definitely worth a visit.
A must-try when in San José! Helados de sorbetera is such a unique traditional ice cream — creamy, spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves, and unlike anything else. The flavor is rich and refreshing at the same time. The shop itself is very local and humble, but that’s part of the charm. Perfect stop after walking around Mercado Central. Definitely worth experiencing this Costa Rican classic.
