This is the big Drake Bay letters sign in Agujitas — a quick photo stop rather than an attraction in itself, and reviewers say as much: the draw is the setting, not the sign. A staircase beside the letters leads down to the beach, and the farther you walk from town, the wilder and emptier the coastline gets; one visitor spotted toucans in the trees along the shore road, and scarlet macaws are common in the mornings and afternoons. Getting to Drake at all is part of the story — roughly 30 km of steep gravel road, best with a proper vehicle. The town nearby has a supermarket and a handful of restaurants.

Drake bay sign for photos
The stars aren't for the letters or the small town itself, but for the breathtakingly unspoiled natural scenery surrounding them. We walked here from our accommodation, which is quite a trek in March, just to do some shopping and take a photo stop at the letters. The town itself isn't particularly noteworthy, but I really enjoyed the friendly, untouristy atmosphere. A staircase leads down to the beach in front of the letters, and the further you get from the town, the more beautiful, wild, and deserted the beaches become. Sometimes you have to walk onto the small road because of the rocks in the water; we even spotted two toucans in the woods there. Scarlet macaws are also very popular in the area, especially in the mornings and afternoons. Don't just do a day trip; stay for a few days, and you'll never want to leave, at least if you're looking for nature and less touristy areas.
A very nice trip to Drake. The entrance and exit, about 30km, is a gravel road with steep inclines and descents. It's not recommended for motorcycles other than dual-sport models. We managed to find a good room for the night, and the food in the restaurants was very good.
