About
Hillside wooden cabins above Agujitas that reviewers repeatedly credit with some of the best views in Drake Bay — scarlet and green macaws doing flybys, toucans and iguanas in the garden, and sunsets guests call among the best they have seen. The trade-off, mentioned in nearly every review: a steep five-minute climb of steps from the main road (staff greet arrivals at the beach and hosts arrange tours). Cabins are screened and open to nature — expect the odd gecko — with fridge and kettle provided since tap water is not drinkable; some deluxe units add air conditioning, a kitchenette, and even a small private plunge pool. An optional breakfast saves the walk into town. If driving, the gravel road up is steep and demands a confident 4x4.

Sunset Lodge has, without a doubt, the most spectacular view in Drake Bay- but it’s a bit of a hike! Be ready to climb a small mountain on the way up. The cabin is very airy, with lots of screened windows. You will have some invertebrate and perhaps gecko roommates, but they’re all very unobtrusive (no mosquitoes). Keep all of your food in the mini fridge and the ants will not bother you. Overall, I highly recommend a stay. Just be ready for a more outdoor experience.
Sunset Lodge truly did have one of the best views in Drake bay! It’s worth spending a little more to get the bungalow with the pool. It was great hanging out on the deck after a day at the beach or doing a guided activity. Also, if you like birding it’s a great spot to sit and watch! We had parrots and macaws flying over and landing in the trees right next to the bungalow. There were several local iguanas that live in the trees as well! We stayed in the Deluxe Cabin which had two AC minisplits that kept the inside nice and cool. The private pool on the deck was awesome - it was clean, cool, and VERY refreshing. Breakfast was also convenient and delicious. The only thing with Sunset Lodge is you do have to hike up some steps from the main road to get there (but is why the view is so good). We did the hike multiple times a day and it’s not too bad, 5 minutes to the beach. Would absolutely stay again!
Drake Bay Sunset Lodge completely stole our hearts. The views from our room were absolutely unbelievable and felt almost unreal, like something out of a dream. If you’re staying in one of the higher rooms on the property, be prepared for a bit of a walk, but honestly it just adds to the adventure and makes the view at the top feel even more magical. We had been travelling Costa Rica in a camper van for about 10 days, so arriving here felt like pure luxury and such a special treat. Our room was phenomenal: clean, cozy, perfectly working AC (a lifesaver in the humidity), and a perfectly sized kitchenette. It felt like a private, picture-perfect romantic escape tucked into the jungle. The pool was the perfect place to cool off, especially since Drake Bay was the most humid stop on our trip. And the sunsets… truly some of the most breathtaking I have ever experienced in my life. Every evening felt like a moment you wanted to pause and hold onto. And the BIRDS! If you love birding, this is absolutely your place. I saw so many different species, and my Merlin bird app picked up calls I hadn’t heard anywhere else during our travels. Waking up to that soundtrack felt magical. This place felt like a little slice of paradise that I never wanted to leave, and we loved it so much that we extended our stay for another night. Muchas gracias por la hospitalidad y amabilidad. Nos sentimos muy bienvenidos. ¡Pura vida!
