A family soda in Los Planes run by Rafa and Ester, at the end of a steep, rough road that reviewers insist is worth pushing through. The cooking is classic Costa Rican: casados with fish that changes daily — dorado, snapper, tuna — plus tacos, burgers, shrimp with rice and fried plantains, and hot breakfasts with fruit, coffee, and juice that one long-staying guest said varied every single day. Prices are modest and portions generous. It also works as a stop on the Drake Bay coastal trail — from the beach by the school, cross the footbridge and duck under the vine-covered porch — and the family rents simple cabinas with meal plans. One hiker was even gifted an ice-cold coconut.

Excellent authentic fresh Costa Rican food! To say this is off the beaten path is an understatement… we almost turned around without going in when we finally arrived at the end of a very steep rough road. A quaint, clean, little family restaurant soda with very modest prices. I had the shrimp with rice and fried plantain and my girls had chicken.
I’ve been here and also stayed in their Cabinas many times. Wonderful family who offers great food and snacks, living in a paradise. I have much love for this place and the beautiful people here.
We’ve been staying at the Los Paniquines Ecolodge for 11 nights and have eaten most meals here as they are just so, so good!! A delicious hot breakfast, including fruit, coffee and juice has been included with our stay and Ester made sure they were different every day for the first week. For lunch or dinner, the Casado (typical dish of rice, beans, salad and choice of protein) is fantastic and the fish changes daily (we’ve had dorado, snapper and tuna). The tacos and hamburgers are also super tasty. Prices are very reasonable and portions are substantial. Beer, soda and fruit drinks are also available. Come visit Rafa and Ester - you will not be disappointed!
